CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS

Mental illness
According to a 2015 assessment by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 564,708 people were homeless on a given night in the United States. At a minimum, 140,000 or 25 percent of these people were seriously mentally ill, and 250,000 or 45 percent had any mental illness. Affective disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and substance abuse disorders are among the most common types of mental illness in the homeless population.

Histories of domestic violence
For many, domestic violence is the immediate cause of their homelessness. Survivors seek homeless service programs after they escape an abusive relationship. Victims of abusive relationships are mostly women and children who don't have the means to acquire and maintain a place they can call home.

Income and housing affordability
Low income level of some individuals and households is not enough to pay for food, clothing, transportation and a place they can call home. Most often this problem is complicated with substance abuse and addiction perpetuating the condition of homelessness.

VOLUNTEER
As a volunteer, you will be making yourself available to be part of a solution. Worcester is a beautiful city having many nice people living and working here. We want to see a city that cares for the weak and the vulnerable, providing food, clothing, and shelter for the homeless and the needy.

Professional volunteers become mentors for other volunteers on the team as we come together to put our knowledge and skills together to help end homelessness in Worcester. Come and join us!
